Calabasas Zoned Out by Chaminade
Russell White, the pupil, learned another lesson from Jeff Young, the teacher, Friday night in the semifinals of the Chaminade tournament.
White, who spent five years as a Chaminade assistant under Young until becoming the coach at Calabasas last season, couldn’t come up with a solution for Young’s smothering 2-3 zone defense.
It was the difference in Chaminade’s 56-33 victory.
“I blame the loss entirely on Jeff Young,” White said, teasingly. “He didn’t teach me enough about zone offense.”
Calabasas (4-9) appeared to be in good shape early in the second quarter, trailing only 12-9. The Coyotes’ zone defense was causing Chaminade (7-4) trouble. It also helped that 6-foot-9 Scott Borchart of Chaminade was on the bench with two fouls.
When Borchart returned with 5:08 left before halftime, the Eagles went on a 9-0 surge to take control.
Calabasas paid close attention to Borchart, creating scoring opportunities for Ryan Arceo, who had 13 points. Borchart finished with 11 points. Josh Jones had nine rebounds.
Chaminade plays Riordan of San Francisco in tonight’s final at 8.
Young and White hugged afterward, both expressing relief the matchup was over.
“I hate it,” Young said. “When he’s not playing against us, I’m rooting so hard for him. He’s like a brother to me. When he beat Agoura [Thursday], I was clapping and cheering. I know he’s going to be successful.”
