‘American Beauty’ Plucks 4 SAG Film Nominations

DreamWorks and ABC received the most Screen Actors Guild nominations in the feature and television categories, the guild said Tuesday. “American Beauty” led the pack of movie nominations with four for DreamWorks; ABC shows received nine SAG nominations.

“The Sopranos,” “Ally McBeal,” “The X-Files,” “NYPD Blue” and “Frasier” are among the TV series with multiple nominations.

There were a few surprises in the feature film categories, with Philip Seymour Hoffman receiving a best actor nomination for his role as a transvestite in the little-seen comedy “Flawless.” Noticeably absent from the best actor and actress nominations were Golden Globe nominees Richard Farnsworth (“The Straight Story’), Matt Damon (“The Talented Mr. Ripley”) and Reese Witherspoon (“Election”).

The Screen Actors Guild’s approximately 97,000 members will vote on the acting categories. The winners in the 13 categories will be announced during a ceremony to be telecast March 12 on TNT from the Shrine Exposition Center. Sidney Poitier will receive the 36th annual life achievement award during the telecast.

Outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role: Annette Bening (“American Beauty”), Janet McTeer (“Tumbleweeds”), Julianne Moore (“The End of the Affair”), Meryl Streep (“Music of the Heart”) and Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”).

Outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role: Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”), Chris Cooper (“American Beauty”), Tom Cruise (“Magnolia”), Michael Clarke Duncan (“The Green Mile”) and Haley Joel Osment (“The Sixth Sense”).

Outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role: Cameron Diaz (“Being John Malkovich”), Angelina Jolie (“Girl, Interrupted”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich”), Julianne Moore (“Magnolia”) and Chloe Sevigny (“Boys Don’t Cry”).

Outstanding performance by a cast in a theatrical motion picture: “American Beauty,” “Being John Malkovich,” “Magnolia,” “The Cider House Rules” and “The Green Mile.”

Television

Outstanding performance by a male actor in a TV movie or miniseries: Hank Azaria (“Tuesdays With Morrie”), Peter Fonda (“The Passion of Ayn Rand”), Jack Lemmon (“Tuesdays With Morrie”), George C. Scott (“Inherit the Wind”) and Patrick Stewart (“A Christmas Carol”).

Outstanding performance by a female actor in a TV movie or miniseries: Kathy Bates (“Annie”), Halle Berry (“Introducing Dorothy Dandridge”), Sally Field (“A Cooler Climate”), Judy Davis (“A Cooler Climate”) and Helen Mirren (“The Passion of Ayn Rand”).

Outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series: David Duchovny (“The X-Files”), Dennis Franz (“NYPD Blue”), James Gandolfini (“The Sopranos”), Rick Schroder (“NYPD Blue”) and Martin Sheen (“The West Wing”).

Outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series: Gillian Anderson (“The X-Files”), Lorraine Bracco (“The Sopranos”), Edie Falco (“The Sopranos”), Nancy Marchand (“The Sopranos”) and Annie Potts (“Any Day Now”).

Outstanding performance by a male actor in a comedy series: Michael J. Fox (“Spin City”), Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”), Peter MacNicol (“Ally McBeal”), David Hyde Pierce (“Frasier”) and Ray Romano (“Everybody Loves Raymond”).
