Burroughs Takes Fifth to Vanquish Valencia
Tyler Newton had 31 points and 17 rebounds and Keith Jarbo had 26 points to power Burroughs High to a surprising 94-59 victory over visiting Valencia in a Foothill League boys’ basketball game on Tuesday night.
Burroughs, ranked No. 10 in the region by The Times, lost to Valencia, 74-64, last month, but has won five consecutive games since.
Valencia (9-14, 3-4 in league) hit five three-point shots in the first quarter, but only two after that.
Burroughs (15-5, 6-1) led, 28-25, at the end of the first quarter, and then outscored Valencia 22-8 in the second quarter.
The Indians’ victory, coupled with Burbank’s win over Saugus, gives them a two-game lead over those two teams in league play.
Burbank 49, Saugus 43--Eddie Nazarian scored 17 points and Damien Jordan had 14 rebounds and four steals for the host Bulldogs (13-8, 4-3) in a Foothill League victory.
Crescenta Valley 78, Hoover 47--Junior James Jenkins scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half, when the Falcons (18-5, 5-2) scored 54 points in a Pacific League game at Hoover.
Sophomore Chris Tarne scored 24 points and freshman Jimmy Goffredo added 17 for No. 9-ranked Crescenta Valley.
Lancaster 62, Palmdale 55--Aaron James had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Anthony Gamboa had 14 points and James Jackson had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles (11-11, 5-2) in a Golden League victory at Lancaster.
Eric Brown scored 31 points for the Falcons (8-14, 3-4).
Santa Paula 72, Calabasas 43--Ryan Frutos had 23 points and nine rebounds as the host Cardinals avenged a defeat to the Coyotes in a Frontier League game.
Santa Paula (8-14, 3-3) lost to Calabasas, 59-44, on Jan. 11, but dominated the rematch, outscoring the Coyotes (5-17, 2-3) 22-4 in the third quarter.
Crossroads 67, Campbell Hall 55--Hassan Bassiri scored 23 of his 25 points in the second half for the Vikings (15-8, 4-3), who came up short in a Delphic League game at Campbell Hall.
The first-place Roadrunners are 14-8, 6-0.
Brentwood 57, Montclair Prep 46--Josiah Johnson had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the host Mounties (13-9, 3-4) in a Delphic League loss.
Village Christian 59, L.A. Baptist 47--Clint Hamblin scored 21 points, making three of five three-point shots, for host Village Christian in an Alpha League game. Hamblin also had four steals and four assists for the Crusaders (10-11, 3-2).
Santa Clara 75, Malibu 50--Chris Post had 20 points, making five of eight three-pointers, to spark host Santa Clara (14-5, 5-1) to a Frontier League victory.
