Santa Margarita Stops El Dorado
The Santa Margarita girls’ water polo team convincingly defended its top ranking in Southern Section Division IV, defeating No. 2 El Dorado, 8-1, in a nonleague game Monday at El Dorado.
The Eagles (17-5) built a 5-0 lead after three quarters and led, 8-0, when El Dorado (11-8) scored its only goal. Erika Figge scored three goals, Jamie Kroeze and Kristina Kunkel each had two and goalkeeper Kristen Carfioli stopped nine shots for Santa Margarita.
In other nonleague games:
Edison 10, Dana Hills 3--Tracey Andersen scored five goals, Ali Malczynski added two and Leyna Belcher had a goal and five steals for Edison (13-12).
Woodbridge 12, Lakewood 11--Kara Danduran’s seventh goal of the game gave visiting Woodbridge a 12-9 lead.
In Orange League boys’ soccer:
Brea Olinda 6, Savanna 3--Josh Alexander and Chris Manton scored two goals each for Brea Olinda (18-3-2, 9-0), which clinched the league title.
Valencia 2, Magnolia 2--Juan Sanchez’s goal on a penalty kick with no time remaining helped Magnolia salvage the tie and clinch second place.
Western 1, Anaheim 1--Jeff Romero’s goal from 35 yards out midway through the second half tied it for Anaheim (8-6-3, 3-4-2).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Corona del Mar 3, University 1--Corona del Mar took a 3-0 first-half lead. Scott Baker, Aldo Bautista and Jon Schrank scored for the Sea Kings (9-6-1, 3-3-1).
