All-Star Football Game Set for July

Plans have been finalized to hold an all-star football game matching top high school players from California and Florida on July 22 at 6 p.m. at the Rose Bowl.

Among the players expected to participate in the CaliFlorida Bowl are quarterbacks Matt Cassel (Chatsworth) and Scott Vossmeyer (Crescenta Valley), running backs James Bethea (Cleveland) and Manuel White (Valencia), receiver Keary Colbert (Hueneme), tight end Will Svitek (Newbury Park), offensive lineman Steve Nevarez (San Fernando), defensive lineman Travis Johnson (Notre Dame) and linebacker Patrick Norton (Hart).

The players will practice for a week at UC Santa Barbara.

* Receivers Sanders Trent and Paul Holifield of Kennedy have committed to New Mexico.

* Dorrick Roy, a 1994 graduate of Montclair Prep who played tight end for the Mounties, has signed a free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders.

BASEBALL

* Jeff Durfee, an assistant at St. Francis the last 13 years, was hired as coach. He replaces John Noce, who resigned.

* Birmingham will hold its alumni game on Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. Burroughs holds its alumni game the same day at 1 p.m.

* David Lamb, a former Newbury Park High infielder, was designated for assignment by the New York Mets a day after being claimed on waivers from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

New York has 10 days to trade him, send him outright to the minors or put him on waivers.

DIVING

* Jesse Ferguson of Dive Thousand Oaks scored 241.40 points to win the Junior Olympic boys’ 16-18 competition at the Dive Thousand Oaks Invitational on Sunday at Thousand Oaks High. Teammate Valerie Day scored 253.09 points to win the girls’ 16-18 division.

Adam Nunez of Dive Thousand Oaks won the boys’ 14-15 with 230.80 points. Randy Deitemeyer finished third with 199.75 points.

Jake Isaacs finished second in the boys’ 10-11 with 185.65 points. Teammate Ryan Rosenberg placed third with 164.45 points.

Calvin Shayer of Dive Thousand Oaks won the boys’ 9 and under division with 105.35 points.

The name of Natasha Case, a soccer player at Harvard-Westlake High, was misspelled in Tuesday’s edition.
