Sprinter Melvin Transfers From Brea Olinda to Gahr
Claude Melvin, the Orange County and Southern Section Division II champion in the 100 and 200 meters at Brea Olinda last season, has transferred to Cerritos Gahr, Gladiator Coach Dan Fitzpatrick said Monday.
Melvin also finished fourth in the 100 at the Masters Meet with a wind-aided 10.40, his best time at that distance, and qualified for the state meet. He also had a county-leading time of 21.23 in the 200, which was also wind aided, and finished sixth at Masters.
Melvin, a senior who moved into the Cerritos attendance area with his mother and brother last month, will be running in the high school 50-meter dash at the L.A. Invitational Saturday.
“We were talking big things before he stepped on campus,” said Fitzpatrick, who guided Gahr to a eighth-place finish in Division I last season. “But with him stepping in, I think it puts us in position to win a state title.”
