UConn Guards Stifled
St. John’s guards Erick Barkley and Bootsy Thornton outscored Connecticut’s Khalid El-Amin and Albert Mouring, 42-2, and the Red Storm rolled to its sixth consecutive victory, 79-64, over the 22nd-ranked Huskies on Monday night at New York.
St. John’s, 19-6 overall and 11-3 in the Big East, defeated a ranked conference opponent for the second consecutive game. Saturday night’s 76-75 victory over then-No. 9 Syracuse also was in front of a sellout crowd of 19,410 at Madison Square Garden.
Barkley had 22 points on his 22nd birthday and Thornton had 20 and they each had four assists. El-Amin and Mouring, Connecticut’s top two scorers, were a combined 0 for 16 from the field, including nine three-point attempts.
The victory was the 300th for St. John’s Coach Mike Jarvis, who is 47-15 in his second season with the Red Storm. His overall record, including stints at Boston University and George Washington, is 300-156.
The loss was the fourth in sixth games for the Huskies (18-8, 7-6).
No. 10 Oklahoma State 84, Missouri 72--Desmond Mason had 25 points and nine rebounds as the Cowboys (22-3, 11-2 in the Big 12) held off a furious late rally by the Tigers (1-9, 9-4) at Columbia, Mo.
Missouri made five three-point shots down the stretch to get within four points after trailing by as many as 20.
No. 25 Utah 96, Nevada Las Vegas 52--Hanno Mottola, listed as doubtful with injuries to his left elbow and right thumb, scored 20 points in a reserve role at Salt Lake City as the Utes (20-5, 9-2 in the Mountain West Conference) extended the nation’s longest home-court win streak to 51. Mottola had been sidelined the previous three games.
Kaspars Kambala had 10 points as the only player for Nevada Las Vegas (16-7, 7-4) to score in double figures.
WOMEN
No. 9 Duke (22-4, 11-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) was a 59-44 winner at Clemson (16-10, 7-7).
