Mendiola, El Toro Get Past Fontana Miller

Giuliana Mendiola had 29 points, nine rebounds and five assists as El Toro defeated Fontana Miller, 59-50, in a Southern Section Division I-AA girls’ basketball quarterfinal Saturday at Miller.

Visiting El Toro (23-6), which led by 10 after three quarters, never relinquished the lead.

Sara Brown had 12 points and Katrina Craig helped out with seven points and 11 rebounds for the Chargers, who will face Lynwood in a semifinal Tuesday.

Danielle Saulsberry scored 19 points for Miller (21-8).

Chino Hills Ayala 69, Westminster 42--Candice Allen scored 31 points to lead the top-seeded Bulldogs (25-4), who will next play Long Beach Wilson.

Long Beach Wilson 59, Esperanza 55 (OT)--Dawn McCullouch scored 22 points, including six in overtime for Wilson (27-4), which eliminated fourth-seeded Esperanza (23-7).

In a Division V-AA game:

Palos Verdes Chadwick 44, Brethren Christian 42--With the score tied, Alyssa Norris hit a baseline jumper at the buzzer to win it for host Chadwick (15-9). Heather Spowart led second-seeded Brethren Christian (15-14) with 12 points.
