NEWPORT BEACH
Thousands of spectators came to watch more than 4,000 runners huff and trot around Fashion Island in the 17th annual Spirit Run on Sunday morning, despite cloudy skies.
Proceeds from the run, organized by sports agent Leigh Steinberg and his wife, Lucy, will go to local public schools. Rita Goldberg, a race spokeswoman, estimated that this year’s Spirit Run, which included seven events, raised more than $120,000. In the past, schools have used money raised by the race to buy computers and improve science, arts and physical education programs and facilities.
The race also drew more than 2,000 child competitors. Organizers said it’s the largest children’s race in Orange County.
The men’s 10K race winner was Danny Reed, 39, of Laguna Niguel. Heather Bray, 25, of Santa Barbara, won the women’s 10K race.
