Support for CenterLine Project

* The Orange County Transportation Authority deserves thanks for its bold step to complete the environmental review process of the $1.52-billion, 29-mile CenterLine light-rail project (Dec. 14).

This is a truly visionary statement for the creation of an efficient, economically sound and environmentally sensitive transportation project in Orange County.

Currently, the CenterLine project has full support from the cities of Fullerton, Irvine and Costa Mesa.

Hope is strong that all the cities along the proposed route will come to see the real benefits of integrating a modern and well-planned transportation system within their communities.

This is one very important step toward the creation of truly livable communities and a sustainable transportation system in Orange County.

* Hundreds of thousands of voters in Orange County support the CenterLine light-rail system. I am one of them. Why aren’t the politicians listening to us?

The region needs improved public transit. This will help tourism, public aesthetics and commuting and provide a host of other benefits.

The Los Angeles metropolitan area is the sixth-largest megalopolis in the world in terms of population and the largest in built-up area. Other areas that are far smaller have much better transit.

Buses aren’t the only option. Light rail is faster, safer and easier to use. The politicians need to stop getting in the way of fixing our choked freeways.

I will vote for politicians who want to help improve our commuting.

In addition, the state and federal governments also want to contribute money for building more mass transit.

We need the CenterLine, not a small system but the entire thing, running from Irvine to Fullerton.
