A nurse who stole about $1 million in cash, stocks and property from an elderly woman in her care has been sentenced to six to 20 years in state prison.

Carol Mickens, 49, will serve the state prison term concurrently with an eight-year federal prison term she received for a conviction on different charges in the same case.

Mickens admitted in court that she conspired with others to loot the bank accounts and stock holdings of 94-year-old Florence Estes. Mickens, who headed a 24-hour home-care team for Estes, also sold the woman’s house and pocketed the proceeds.

Estes, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, now lives in the Albany County Nursing Home.

As part of her sentencing for forgery, grand larceny and possession of a forged instrument, Mickens must repay $20,000 to Estes, on top of about $720,000 in restitution that she was ordered to repay under her federal sentence.
