Five Area Players Chosen All-State
Linebacker Patrick Norton of Hart High, defensive lineman Travis Johnson of Notre Dame, offensive lineman Steve Nevarez of San Fernando, quarterback Zac Wasserman of Westlake and running back Manuel White of Valencia were selected to the all-state football team by Cal-Hi Sports.
Seven players from the Valley and Ventura County region were selected to the second team, including running back Jermaine Marshall of Kilpatrick, who set the state season rushing record with 3,586 yards.
Also on the second team were offensive linemen Adrian Ayala of St. Bonaventure and Keith Holt of Westlake, linebacker Ray Cassaday of Valencia, quarterback Casey Clausen of Alemany, tight end Will Svitek of Newbury Park and kicker John Wall of Birmingham.
D.J. Williams, a running back and linebacker for Concord De La Salle, was chosen player of the year. De La Salle edged Hart as team of the year. Mike Herrington of Hart was coach of the year.
Matt Ware of Loyola was selected junior of the year and Matt Gutierrez of De La Salle was sophomore of the year.
The all-state junior team included quarterbacks Kyle Matter of Hart and John Sciarra of St. Francis, running back De’Andre Scott of Alemany, receiver James Norris of Kennedy, kicker Jose Duarte of Highland, defensive linemen Kaelen Jakes of Valencia and tight end-defensive lineman Brandon Faumuina of Buena.
Second-team juniors were running back Tyler Ebell of Ventura, receiver Larry Viltz of Crespi, defensive lineman Peter Dubsky of Hart, linebacker Jake Scott of Buena and tight end-defensive lineman Evan Allen of Hart.
The all-state sophomore team included running backs Lorenzo Booker of St. Bonaventure, Curtis Brown of Paraclete and Tim Gregory of Hart, quarterback-defensive back Ruben Nevarez of San Fernando, defensive linemen Tim Volk of Westlake and Jason Lance of Crespi, and offensive lineman Chris Frome of Hart.
The small schools team included Ayala, Booker, receiver Adam Gray-Hayward and defensive lineman Tucker Bennett of St. Bonaventure, Brown and linebacker Robert Watts of Paraclete, and Marshall.
