* Herbert Aigner; Palisades High Founding Principal

Herbert L. Aigner, 92, founding principal of Palisades High School. A teacher and administrator with the Los Angeles Unified School District for 41 years, Aigner was born and reared in Los Angeles and earned three degrees from UCLA as its campus shifted from the Vermont Avenue location of what is now Los Angeles Community College to Westwood. Aigner started teaching chemistry in 1929 at Beverly Hills High School (then a part of the vast Los Angeles district). He earned his administration credential and worked as registrar, vice principal and eventually principal of San Fernando and Olive Vista junior high schools and Franklin High School. In 1961, he was asked to organize the new $6-million Palisades High School as its founding principal. He headed the school until his retirement in 1970, rating the job his favorite of his long career in education. Aigner served terms as president of both the Los Angeles City High School Principals Assn. and the Los Angeles Junior High School Principals Assn. On Jan. 16 in Los Angeles.
