Re “Clinton Lays Out Ambitious Plans in Last State of Union,” Jan. 28: President Clinton’s super laundry list of objectives may be one of the greatest social engineering blueprints ever drafted.

If the Democrats are the party that is concerned about the environment, how come their president is proposing tax cuts for parents who overpopulate? When is a president going to be brave enough to tell this species that it needs to seriously scale back? How about tax incentives for those who don’t reproduce?

The first State of the Union address of the 21st century will be remembered as a watershed in American history. For the first time an ordinary citizen was singled out and honored with a standing ovation by a joint session of Congress in recognition of the fact that he sends support payments to his estranged family.

The White House made a brief comment about Clinton’s proposal to “crack down” on deadbeat dads (Jan. 27).

Why is it that no one in office has stepped up to defend the countless fathers who dutifully pay their support, yet are denied the right to see their children by the mothers? Is it because that is not politically correct? Is it because we as a society do not place enough value on the role of the father?

We berate those who are emotionally unavailable and punish those who try to do right. Why is it that we have to take sides as opposed to trying to help everyone involved?

Looking at the Republican response to President Clinton’s speech, you would think that it is the Pro-Choice Party. Choose your doctor, OK. Choose your school, cool. Choose your retirement plan, nifty. What about that other choice? I don’t think they can have it both ways.
