Rho, Conway, Bollini Named to AJGA Team
Angela Rho of Fullerton, Steve Conway of Irvine and Nico Bollini of Yorba Linda have been selected for the AJGA Canon Cup team that will represent the West in the annual Ryder Cup-style matches, the AJGA announced Wednesday.
Rho will be making her third consecutive appearance on the team. Conway and Bollini will be making their Canon Cup debuts.
The Canon Cup, which pits 10 top boys and 10 top girls from the Western United States against their counterparts from the East, is Aug. 7-10 at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kan.
HONORS
Three Orange County residents will be among those receiving “2000 Spirit of Sports” honors today at the Women’s Sports Foundation’s second annual awards luncheon at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood.
Sandy Woepse, a coach at Northwood High and for the Irvine Youth Track Club, will receive the Female Community Coach award; Suzanne Robert, co-founder and manager of the Irvine Youth Track Club, will receive the Sports Mom award, and her daughter, Jennifer Robert, who participates in wrestling and track and field at Irvine High, will receive the Amateur Athlete award.
The event, chaired by Geena Davis, an Academy Award-winning actress and accomplished archer, will feature present and past Olympians. Gold medal-winning gymnasts Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner will present the awards. Winners receive a trophy and $500 Mervyn’s gift certificate.
The luncheon, which begins at 11:30 a.m. and includes a fashion show, is open to the public. Tickets are $125 and available by calling (310) 559-9334, Ext. 162. Raleigh Studios is located at 5300 Melrose Ave.
BASKETBALL
Kim Lummus, who spent last season as a student-coach at the University of Texas, has joined the UC Irvine women’s basketball staff as its third assistant, Anteater Coach Mark Adams announced.
Lummus graduated in June from Texas, where she was an honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference selection in 1999. She was an academic all-conference selection from 1997-99.
Last season, she helped coach the Longhorns to a 21-13 record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament.
BASEBALL
The Orange County Scorpions, leading the Western Semi-Pro baseball league, concludes its regular season this weekend with doubleheaders against the two teams tied for second place.
The Scorpions (17-7 overall, 13-3 in conference) open the weekend with a two-game lead over the North County Waves and the San Diego Barona Stars. They host the Waves, from San Diego, on Saturday at Saddleback College, with the first game starting at noon. On Sunday, the Scorpions travel to San Diego to play the Barona Stars.
The league champion advances to the National Baseball Congress World Series, which starts later this month in Wichita, Kansas.
The Scorpions’ roster features many county players, including David Munoz, shortstop (Esperanza High/Biola); Matt Colin, center field (Esperanza/Oral Roberts); Jimmy Luster, shortstop/second base (Santa Margarita/Azusa Pacific); Jon Rouwenhorst, outfielder (Brethren Christian/Biola); Josue Lopez, first base (El Toro/Saddleback); Mark Wade, third base (El Dorado/Biola); Jason Martini, first base, (Ocean View/Cal State Los Angeles); Brian Ingstad, catcher (Esperanza/Saddleback College); Charlie Waite, catcher (Newport Harbor/Mississippi); Jesse Gallup, pitcher (Dana Hills/Cal Poly San Luis Obispo); Andrew Barry, pitcher (Laguna Beach/Saddleback College); Pat Stevens, outfielder (Chapman); and Chad Cummings, pitcher (Saddleback College).
