LA HABRA
A Sept. 1 pretrial hearing has been scheduled for Alex Jose Esquivel, 26, accused of killing a La Habra resident four years ago.
Esquivel pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, which allegedly resulted in the death of Robert Holguin, then 46, on Feb. 17, 1996.
A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 15, with attorneys waiting for police records and other paperwork before proceeding with the case.
“We’re up to 800 or so pages in police records, and are waiting for transcripts of witnesses in other related cases,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Jeff Levy said.
Esquivel, who was the first person from Orange County to be extradited from Mexico, is one of 11 people being prosecuted for murder or related crimes in the death of Holguin, who was shot at Cypress Avenue and Grace Street.
