Griffith Helps Monarchs Surge Past Mercury Into Third Place
The Sacramento Monarchs moved into third place in the WNBA’s Western Conference, a half game ahead of Phoenix, with a 70-63 victory over the Mercury before 11,337 Sunday at Phoenix.
Yolanda Griffith had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Sacramento (18-10), which clinched the season series over Phoenix (17-10). Ticha Penicheiro had 11 assists.
Jennifer Gillom scored 23 points for Phoenix, which got within four points in the final minute.
Portland 76, Orlando 55--Sophia Witherspoon scored 17 points and the Fire (9-18) outscored the stunned Miracle, 44-22, in the second half before 8,634 at Portland, Ore.
Adrienne Johnson scored 20 for Orlando (14-13).
Miami 64, Seattle 51--Sheri Sam had 17 points and seven rebounds before 8,616 at Seattle as the Sol (10-17) dealt the Storm (4-23) its fourth loss in a row.
Seattle played without its two leading scorers, Edna Campbell and Kamila Vodichkova, who are injured.
