2 Drown as Fishing Boat Sinks Off Maine Coast
CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine — A 52-foot fishing trawler sank in stormy seas about 17 miles off the coast, and two of its three crew members drowned, the Coast Guard said Wednesday.
The Coast Guard received a distress call from the Portland, Maine-based Infinity late Tuesday and dispatched an airplane, a helicopter and a high-speed rescue boat, Petty Officer Dean Drake said.
The rescuers faced heavy rain, strong wind and 8- to 12-foot seas. They located the site of the sinking after smelling fuel.
Survivor Daniel Ela was treated at the Maine Medical Center in Portland and later released. The bodies of Shawn McDougall and Jeffrey Martin were recovered.
