MetroStars Don’t Miss Matthaeus
Who needs Lothar Matthaeus?
The New York-New Jersey MetroStars apparently don’t.
They got a goal and assist each from Clint Mathis and Adolfo ValenciaSaturday in a 4-2 win over New England before 10,081 at East Rutherford, N.J.
The victory was the fourth in five games for the MetroStars since Matthaeus-- a disappointment in the MLS--returned to Germany to play with the national team in Euro 2000.
New England, which lost for only the third time in 10 MLS games, leads the Eastern Division with 25 points.
Mathis scored the only goal of the second half, in the 49th minute, when he sent a free kick into the right corner of the Revolution net from 25 yards out.
The MetroStars got goals from Billy Walsh, Valencia and Steve Shak in the first inning in taking a 3-2 lead.
Dallas 4, Kansas City 1--Ariel Graziani scored two goals for the Burn in a rout before 7,912 at Dallas.
Jason Kreis and Mark Santel also scored for the Burn and Lazo Alavanja had two assists. Matt McKeon scored for Kansas City.
Chicago 3, D.C. United 2--Josh Wolff, Diego Gutierrez and Peter Nowak scored in a 15-minute span of the second half for the Fire in its win before 15,117 at Chicago.
San Jose 3, Miami 1--Abdul Thompson Conteh had goals in each half for the Earthquakes, who extended their home unbeaten streak to 12 games (10-0-2) before 12,063 at San Jose.
Columbus 0, Colorado 0--Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Adin Brown made six saves and the Crew’s Matt Napoleon had three in the tie before 6,442 at Denver.
