HUNTINGTON BEACH
The City Council unanimously approved studying the cost of building an animal shelter in Huntington Beach.
The $50,000 study comes in response to 350 postcards from concerned people calling for the city to provide humane animal services.
Councilman Ralph Bauer said a shelter in Huntington Beach would be an alternative to the county shelter, where Huntington Beach strays are currently impounded. If the city builds a shelter, it may be shared by other cities in a joint-powers agreement.
Each month, the county shelter kills about 20 dogs and 62 cats, said Kathy Francis, the agency’s public education officer.
