TV Ratings Peak in Los Angeles
The Lakers’ title-clinching victory in Game 6 of the NBA finals Monday night got a 39.2 television rating with a 56 share of the audience in Los Angeles, and the average for the six games of the finals was a 31.4 with a 50 share.
The 39.2 is the highest rating for a Laker telecast in L.A. since at least 1987, and the 31.4 is the highest average rating for a Laker finals in L.A. over the same span, according to the Channel 4 research department.
Other average L.A. ratings for finals involving the Lakers include 29.9 (1991), 28.7 (1988), 25.7 (1987), and 25.3 (1989). Ratings for finals before 1987 were not available.
Nationally, the numbers were not as impressive. Game 6 got a national rating of 14.7 with a 26 share, bringing the series average rating up to an 11.6, which is still the second lowest for an NBA finals since 1981 and only 3% better than the 11.3 for last year, when San Antonio defeated New York in five games.
Michael Jordan’s last game in 1998, Game 6 of the NBA finals between Chicago and Utah, got a 22.3.
A rating represents a percentage of all television households; a share represents only households where television is being watched.
