Central Bank Chief Taken Into Custody

Prosecutors detained Indonesia’s central bank governor after he refused the president’s demands to step down. Bank Indonesia Gov. Sjahril Sabirin was placed in custody for 20 days after proclaiming his innocence and rejecting President Abdurrahman Wahid’s repeated calls for his resignation. Two weeks ago, prosecutors named Sabirin a suspect in the so-called Baligate scandal involving the alleged illegal transfer last year of $80 million from the insolvent Bali Bank to a company controlled by a senior official of the then-ruling Golkar Party.
