Befouled Beaches Threaten Holiday

Swimming remained banned along 22 miles of some of South Florida’s most popular beaches a week after a contractor drove a concrete piling through a 54-inch sewage pipe, dumping more than 60 million gallons of raw human waste into an inlet just west of Miami Beach. Officials say beaches could remain closed through the busy July 4 holiday.
