FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--The striped bass bite has tapered off, but largemouth bass are still being caught on crawdads, night crawlers and assorted lures, mostly crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Some catfish and panfish.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass are getting active and biting mainly on anchovies. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are striking jigs, but fishing is fair at best. Catfish action is better and bluegills and crappies are in the mix.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Bass fishing is fair and the large ones aren’t showing on the hooks. A 9-pound 8-ounce catch tops the list. Catfish are biting on mackerel and Night crawlers, averaging eight pounds. Some trout.

LAKE PIRU--Nothing great to report. Some trout caught deep on Needlefish and an occasional bass caught on a night crawler or crankbait.

Orange County

ANAHEIM LAKE--Catfish are biting early and late on shrimp and mackerel. Six anglers in 24 hours filled a stringer with 220 pounds of the whiskered slugs. A 24-hour pass ups the limit to 15 fish.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish biting on mackerel and night crawlers. Bass fishing is best at sunset on buzzbaits, but overall not too good.

OSO RESERVOIR--Bass fishermen are still scoring in double digits using grubs and spinnerbaits. Catfish action is fair to good.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout remain the best bet but fishing is slow. You have to troll deep near the dam to have a chance at trout. Red-ear perch are biting sporadically on pieces of worms.

San Bernardino County

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--A 9-2 trout was caught on yellow Power Bait. The trout bite is fair and the bass bite is slow to fair.

JESS RANCH LAKES--Catfish are biting on mackerel and trout guts, averaging three-six pounds. Trout are biting, being cleaned for the table and apparently gutted for catfish bait.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Catfish are biting late afternoons into darkness, averaging one-three pounds. Mackerel and shrimp best baits. A contest for cash prizes runs today through July 4. Details: (909) 277-4489.

LAKE PERRIS--An 8-8 bass caught on a waterdog at the marina tops the list. Fishing has been slow.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--Crappies and catfish are biting better than trout, but most are still fishing for trout, doing OK with inflated night crawlers.

LAKE POWAY--Catfish at night providing a reason to come here, although a few bass are being caught.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--An 83-pound catfish was caught by a bass fishermen using a spinnerbait at Lower Otay. Bluegill action is good at San Vicente and Lower Otay. Bass fishing is best at San Vicente and Hodges.

LAKE WOHLFORD--A 12-3 bass was caught on a night crawler and fishing is fair. Catfish action is better and one 19-9 caught on a Power Worm tops the list.

Eastern Sierra

The lakes above Bishop are producing well and South Lake gets top billing this week as the Eagle Lake rainbows have begun to bite. Bishop Creek is fair on night crawlers and crickets, and a big Alpers rainbow is coming out almost daily. In the Mammoth Lakes area, Crowley is still rated very good, Rock Creek Lake and Rock Creek are fair to good, Convict Lake is fair for small fish but producing more lunkers, and Twin Lakes are very good. Hard to go wrong anywhere.

The June Lake Loop is a good place in the morning, but slow to fair during the day. A 6-6 rainbow was caught on Power Bait at Silver. In Bridgeport, the East Walker River is still a hot spot for fly fishermen using a variety of size 16-18 nymphs. Bridgeport Reservoir is getting better, with rainbow Power Bait and inflated night crawlers getting fish averaging 1 1/2-plus pounds. The West Walker River is fair for fly- and bait fishermen. Virginia Lakes get a slight nod over Twin Lakes.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--68 anglers (3 boats): 3 lingcod, 130 red rockcod, 166 rockcod, 90 rockfish.

AVILA BEACH (Patriot Sportfishing)--60 anglers (2 boats): 62 rockcod, 88 rockfish, 99 red rockcod, 149 bolina, 5 lingcod, 2 halibut, 3 goldeneye, 30 red snapper.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--48 anglers (2 boats): 116 calico bass, 150 sand bass, 1 white seabass, 10 mackerel, 60 barracuda, 7 lingcod, 95 red snapper, 30 rockfish.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--168 anglers (8 boats): 24 white seabass, 12 yellowtail, 60 whitefish, 20 sheephead, 394 sand bass, 18 rockfish, 3 halibut, 599 calico bass, 5 blue perch, 314 barracuda. (Captain Hook’s)--38 anglers (2 boats): 7 yellowtail, 106 calico bass, 82 barracuda, 1 halibut, 14 rockfish, 5 sheephead, 11 whitefish.

PORT HUENEME--58 anglers (3 boats): 10 white seabass, 1 yellowtail, 145 calico bass, 95 barracuda, 2 halibut, 6 shallow water rockfish, 110 sand bass, 1 sculpin.

MARINA DEL REY--157 anglers (6 boats): 27 white seabass, 8 halibut, 203 barracuda, 416 sand bass, 203 calico bass.

REDONDO BEACH--114 anglers (6 boats): 586 calico bass, 235 sand bass, 72 barracuda, 3 halibut, 1 sculpin, 57 white seabass.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--129 anglers (4 boats): 2 yellowtail, 774 sand bass, 48 barracuda, 3 calico bass, 1 sole. (22nd St. Landing)--270 anglers (8 boats): 16 yellowtail, 60 white seabass, 45 calico bass, 154 barracuda, 1,824 sand bass, 1 halibut, 1 sculpin.
