Mendoza scored three impressive goals to help Estancia to a 5-2 victory over Torrance Bishop
Montgomery in the Southern Section Division IV boys’ soccer championship game at La Mirada
High Saturday. In the 34th minute, Mendoza curved a corner kick just inside the right goal post for his first score. He gave the Eagles a two-goal cushion in the 56th minute, then scored his team’s fifth goal eight minutes later.

Won a state title at 103 pounds after pinning Sal Gonzales of Merced in the first round Saturday.

Went 47 feet 5 inches in the triple jump at Santa Margarita Friday, the best mark by a county athlete since 1994.
Brittany Hayes
Foothill, Water Polo
Hayes scored two goals in the fourth quarter of the Southern Section Division I title game Wednesday, helping unseeded Foothill break a 1-1 tie and defeat No. 2 Irvine, 5-2, for its first Southern Section title at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. Hayes, one of three key freshmen for the Knights, scored 69 goals for Foothill this season, breaking the school record of 67 set by teammate Daylene Coberly during the 1997-98 season.

Pitched a no-hitter, a two-hitter and struck out 20 in a doubleheader victory over West Hills Chaminade.

Capistrano Valley, Soccer
Scored her 15th goal of the season in 2-0 victory over Claremont in the Southern Section Division I title game.
