Shanafelt Helps Saddleback Defeat Cypress in Softball
Saddleback held off a seventh-inning rally by Cypress and won, 5-3, in an Orange Empire Conference softball game Friday at Saddleback.
Nikki Shanafelt had two hits and two runs batted in for Saddleback (7-5-1, 4-2 in conference).
Yvette Martinez hit a two-run double in the seventh for Cypress (11-2-1, 5-2).
In another conference game:
Orange Coast 8, Irvine Valley 4--Orange Coast’s Kim Guillen earned her first save, getting the final out in the bottom of the seventh after Irvine Valley had loaded the bases. Jennifer Jensen had a two-run triple and a double for the Pirates (13-10, 2-5).
Irvine Valley is 2-10, 0-7.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:
Saddleback 158, San Diego Mesa 57, Cypress 22--Jason Whelchel won the 50 (23.20 seconds) and 100 freestyle (51.60) for Saddleback.
In South Coast Conference women’s swimming:
Golden West wins two--Alyson Edoff, formerly of Orange High, won the 500 freestyle in 5:09.00 for the visiting Rustlers (2-0), who beat El Camino, 110-12, and East Los Angeles, 111-12.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s track and field:
Orange Coast 131, Cuyamaca 113, Santa Ana 106--Orange Coast’s Yong Duk Kim won the 400 meters (49.6) and anchored the Pirates’ winning 400 relay team.
In Orange Empire Conference women’s track and field:
Cuyamaca 140, Orange Coast 127, Santa Ana 81--Zoila Gomez won the 1,500 in 4:46.3 and finished second in the 800 (2:23.1) for Orange Coast.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball:
Golden West 3, Long Beach City 1--David Cornett had 25 kills for visiting Golden West (4-1), which won, 12-15, 15-13, 15-12, 16-14.
