Green Cards

“Camping Out for Green Card Renewals” (March 5) certainly forcefully brings home the stupidity and arrogance of our public officials. Math was never my strong point, but even I can figure this out. An estimated 200,000 green cards are going to expire in the year 2000 [in Southern California]. Deleting weekends and holidays, that leaves 250 work days in the year. That means that 800 applicants are going to show up daily to have their papers processed. Two offices process the applications. Duh!

On top of that, Russ Bergeron, an INS spokesman, is quoted as saying these poor folks should get the application from the Internet. Yeah, right! Like the folks who need green card renewals are going to have access to the Internet. The government we have at present is so out of touch with real life it is frightening.
