IRVINE
When Irvine Unified School District’s Board of Education made an unsuccessful pitch for a $95 parcel tax in November, critics accused the district of not trying hard enough to get more money out of Sacramento.
But district officials said they haven’t been idle. They’ve formed a Coalition of Legislative Action, which includes trustees, nonteaching employees, administrators, parents, teachers and the Irvine Public Schools Foundation.
They’ve also written legislation to increase funding that is making its way through the state Legislature.
The bill, introduced by state Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), would increase funding for school districts with high attendance rates.
It was Irvine’s administrators who came up with the idea, hired a lobbyist and pitched the bill to Schiff, district officials said.
