Riverside Poly Earns Doubleheader Split With Mater Dei
Mater Dei split a baseball doubleheader with Riverside Poly Tuesday night at Cal State Fullerton.
The Monarchs (3-3) won the first game, 8-5. Josh Hansen hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and Sergio Santos had three hits.
Riverside Poly (4-2) won the second game, 9-3. Mater Dei’s Jason Murray hit a two-run home run.
In other nonleague games:
No. 8 Santa Margarita 12, Marina 0--Matt Wilkerson had three hits and two RBIs for visiting Santa Margarita (4-2), and teammate Chris Malec went four for five, including a triple and three RBIs.
Buena Park 13, Bolsa Grande 3--Junior Adam Medina was three for three with three RBIs. Jeff Keller had four hits, two RBIs and pitched the first four innings, giving up one run, to pick up the victory for Buena Park (5-3).
Los Alamitos 5-1, Long Beach Wilson 0-6--Junior pitcher Adam Sargeant gave up three hits to lead visiting Los Alamitos (4-2) in the first game of the doubleheader. Tad Shimada had three hits with a double and two runs scored for the Griffins in the first game.
In the second game, Jeff Kline singled in the Griffins’ only run.
Los Amigos 1, Costa Mesa 0--Pitcher Raphael Jesus opened the sixth inning for visiting Los Amigos (2-3) with a walk. He stole second base and was sacrificed to third by Freddy Bajo. Jesus Rodarte then tripled home Jesus.
Jesus completed the shutout, giving up two hits and striking out eight for the Lobos.
Loara 12, Diamond Bar 1 (5, mercy)--Ryan Gusman had two hits and four RBIs, including a three-run double, in a nine-run second inning, and scored three runs. David Ortiz had three hits, including a homer, and three RBIs for Loara (4-2).
South Gate 7, Garden Grove 7 (8, darkness)--Garden Grove (2-2-1) had six consecutive hits and scored five runs to tie score in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Joe Harkey led off the sixth with a double for the Argonauts. After three singles, Juan Delgado hit a three-run triple to bring Garden Grove within one run. Dan MacLeith hit a single to drive in Delgado. Ricardo Cepeda had four hits and two RBIs for Garden Grove.
Saddleback 7-5, Sunny Hills 6-17--Tony Gonzalez had four hits in the second game of the doubleheader for Sunny Hills (3-4).
In the first game, Fidel Valverde had three hits and drove in the winning run for host Saddleback (2-5).
Tustin 4-5, Foothill 0-3--Michael Castillo struck out four and gave up one hit en route to a shutout for host Tustin (3-3). In the first game, Johnny Restrepo and Jose Martinez hit solo homers and Juan Martinez recorded nine strikeouts for the host Tillers (2-3). Chad Biggler was two for three with a homer, double and two RBIs for visiting Foothill (2-3).
Valencia 7, Troy 6--Matt Castillo came on to pitch for visiting Valencia (4-2) with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and recorded three straight outs to get the save.
In the La Habra tournament:
Whittier California 10, La Habra 9--Tristan Cadberry hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to tie the score, 9-9, in the championship final. But California’s Vince Cordova, who was the game’s winning pitcher, scored the winning run in the top of the seventh. La Habra is 5-1.
