Cleveland Cashes In Errors in 7-5 Upset Over El Camino Real

Cleveland High scored three runs in the sixth inning to defeat host El Camino Real, 7-5, Tuesday in a West Valley League game.

Cleveland (11-13, 4-9 in league play) trailed, 5-4, after El Camino Real scored three runs in the fifth. But the Cavaliers rallied in the sixth, helped by three errors.

Greg Acheatel and Jason Kort each had two hits for El Camino Real (17-7, 10-3), which finished with five errors.

Sophomore Byron Grubman (5-4) pitched a complete game for Cleveland, allowing 10 hits.

Conor Jackson, El Camino Real’s All-City infielder, was held out of the game after suffering a concussion last week.

Chatsworth 9, Granada Hills 6--Sophomore left-hander Joe Guntz (10-0) scattered eight hits and Danny Dominguez had two hits and two runs batted in to help Chatsworth (22-1-1, 13-0) clinch the West Valley League title at Granada Hills (14-10, 6-7).

Sylmar 3, Kennedy 2--Eddie Camacho’s home run in the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and allowed Sylmar (17-7, 10-3) to take sole possession of second place in a Valley Mission League with a victory at Kennedy (16-11, 9-4).

Camacho earned the victory with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

San Fernando 8, Monroe 2--Abraham Gonzalez (8-2) gave up four hits in five innings and was three for three with two RBIs for host San Fernando (17-10, 11-2) in a Valley Mission League game.

Crespi 13, Alemany 1--Marshall Plouffe pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and Armando Contreras had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice to help the Celts (22-3-1, 9-1-1) clinch the Mission League championship in a game at Valley College halted after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Harvard-Westlake 6, Loyola 5--Yoni Resnik scattered six hits through six innings and Brian Shields had a three-run double for Harvard-Westlake (13-7, 4-7) in a Mission League game at Loyola.

Notre Dame 14, Calabasas 2--Brendan Ryan doubled, homered and drove in two runs for the Knights (15-9) in a nonleague victory at Calabasas (13-9).

Calabasas’ Tony Sulser (4-4), who has signed with Arizona, allowed nine runs and nine hits in six innings.

Oxnard 11, Channel Islands 9--Noah Rodriguez had two hits, including a three-run home run, for host Oxnard (18-6, 8-3) in a Pacific View League game.

Matt Merricks pitched a hitless seventh inning to earn his sixth save, and had a home run and a run-scoring double.

Hueneme 13, Rio Mesa 3--Jaime Martinez hit a three-run home run and finished with four hits and four RBIs for the host Vikings (6-20, 2-9) in a Pacific View League game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Valencia 8, Canyon 7--Jacob Sheffield’s two-out, three-run double capped a seven-run seventh inning for host Valencia (18-7, 7-7) in a Foothill League game. Sheffield homered in the fifth.

Nordhoff 10, Malibu 3--Tony Lagos had four hits and stole three bases, and John Hill homered and had three RBIs for host Nordhoff (16-4, 10-1) in a Frontier League game.

Village Christian 12, Pasadena Marshall 2--Albert Quintana (2-2) pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and had two hits and two RBIs for visiting Village Christian (14-5, 6-1) in an Alpha League game. The Crusaders play Paraclete for the league title Thursday.

Paraclete 5, Kilpatrick 2--Matt Meyer had three hits, including a home run, for host Paraclete (9-13, 5-2) in an Alpha League game.
