Worley Resigns as Saugus Baseball Coach

Doug Worley announced his resignation Wednesday after 25 years as the Saugus High baseball coach.

Worley, who started when the school opened in 1975, has a career record of 380-228-12 entering his last game Friday when the Centurions (7-16-2) play Burbank.

Worley guided Saugus to seven league titles and two Southern Section championship games, losing at Dodger Stadium in the 2-A Division final in 1986 and 3-A final in 1989.

* Tracy Goebel, a left-handed pitcher for Thousand Oaks, signed with Cal State Northridge.

* Tim Browne, coach at Alemany since 1995, will resign at the end of the season to focus on being athletic director. He will be replaced by assistant Randy Thompson.

* Outfielder Nick Browne and Bob Lofrano of Pierce College were selected WSC Southern Division player and coach of the year, respectively.

First baseman Yaron Peters of Cuesta was chosen Northern Division player of the year. Ken Wagner of Moorpark and Larry Lee of Cuesta were co-coaches of the year.

ATHLETICS

* Community activist Duke Russell of Hollywood is staging a rally and news conference at 5:30 p.m. Friday at San Fernando High in an effort to persuade Mission College to restore baseball and softball next spring.

After failing to have the Los Angeles Community College District board issue an ultimatum to Mission, Russell has turned to a grass-roots effort.

Mission is planning to restore men’s and women’s soccer as well as baseball and softball in the 2001-02 school year.

But Russell said the delay is depriving student-athletes from Kennedy, San Fernando and Sylmar highs from continuing their educations and playing careers at a local community college.

Russell said the Western State Conference will finalize schedules for next season on May 17 and that it’s not too late to bring back baseball and softball next spring.

BASKETBALL

* Allen Freemon has resigned after one season as girls’ coach at Crescenta Valley High. Freemon, who guided the Falcons (17-10) to second place in the Pacific League, will remain at the school as a math teacher.

SOFTBALL

* Oaks Christian High, set to open in the fall, hired former Newbury Park coach Pete Ackermann as coach.
