Fred E. Case, 82, professor of management at UCLA’s Anderson School and a noted expert on housing, real estate and urban studies. Born in Logansport, Ind., Case graduated from Indiana University before serving in the Army during World War II. After the war, Case taught briefly at the University of Florida before coming to UCLA, where he earned his doctorate and joined the faculty. His tenure at UCLA, which lasted into the late 1980s, was marked by a deep commitment to research and public service. Case served on both the city’s Building and Safety Commission and Planning Commission. He wrote books and monographs on housing markets, property valuation, environmental management and urban development. His work influenced public and private decision-making in the region, and also affected students who later assumed positions of responsibility. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Salvation Army, Indiana University or the UCLA Library. On May 5 in St. Augustine, Fla., of complications from Parkinson’s disease.
