Quake Rocks Chile, Argentina; 1 Killed
A strong earthquake struck northern Chile and Argentina, setting off a landslide at a copper mine that killed a miner. The temblor struck at 2:45 p.m. and had a preliminary magnitude of 6.8, the Seismological Institute of the University of Chile said. The U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo., said the quake’s magnitude was 7.0. The temblor, which temporarily cut telephone links to some areas in northern Chile, was centered in a sparsely populated area near the northern Argentine city of Salta, about 125 miles from the Chilean border. A 24-year-old miner was buried by a landslide in Tierra Amarilla, about 425 miles north of Santiago, the capital, Chilean Deputy Interior Minister Jorge Burgos said. There were no reports of damage or injury in Argentina.
