SAN CLEMENTE
The City Council has approved closing the 600 block of Avenida Victoria and the lower Pier Bowl parking lot for a women’s and junior professional surfing contest at T Street beach from Sept. 29 through Oct. 1.
The Billabong surfwear company will host the event in conjunction with a men’s competition at Trestles in San Onofre.
The T Street event will also include a skateboard half-pipe competition and a Jumbotron with a live feed of the men’s competition.
The council gave its approval last week over the protests of Avenida Victoria residents who complained about pedestrian traffic, the street closure and noise.
Billabong officials said the event would attract 7,000 to 10,000 people to T Street beach.
