Two Workers Killed in Construction Site Accident
CHINO — Two electrical workers died early Monday while working at the bottom of a 40-foot vault at a water desalination plant construction site.
Chino Valley Independent Fire District rescue workers pulled the dead workers from the vault at the Santa Ana Project Watershed Authority plant, where the two had been installing wiring.
Autopsies are planned, but firefighters at the scene said the men probably suffocated in the vault.
Mark Troxel, 41, of Colton and Matthew Wall, 27, of Riverside died at the scene, said Fire Division Chief Phil Armentrout. The two men worked for Cadri Construction Inc. of Lake Elsinore.
Company officials could not be reached, but Cal-OHSA spokesman Dean Fryer said Cadri Construction has a “pretty clean history,” with only two citations issued since 1993 for minor violations.
Before workers go into a vault, they are supposed to test for contaminants in the air, check the oxygen levels and make sure someone is waiting on the outside, Fryer said.
