Chapman Loses on Late Goal
Freshman Anne Merten scored with 1 minute 50 seconds remaining to lift Willamette to a 1-0 victory over Chapman in the final of the NCAA Division III West Regional women’s soccer tournament Sunday at Willamette, Ore.
No. 8 Willamette (19-2-1) advanced to the national quarterfinals.
Chapman (17-5-1) was outshot, 12-6, with Panther goalkeeper Kim Rudloff recording three saves.
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer:
San Diego State 1, UC Irvine 0--San Diego State scored on an own goal in the ninth minute. Tyler Reid and C.J. Cooper each had a save for Irvine (11-7-1, 4-2-1), which finished second in the Pacific Division and advanced to the MPSF tournament at Fullerton Friday and Sunday. The Aztecs finished 6-11-1, 2-4-1.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, Columbia 1--After losing the first game, the Anteaters (8-15) rallied to win, 14-16, 15-7, 15-7, 15-1. Brenda Waterman had 14 digs and eight kills and Chanda McLeod had 13 kills for Irvine. Columbia is 16-11.
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo:
UC Irvine 12, Pepperdine 6--Jeff Powers scored four goals and Tony Grosso had three for Irvine (16-5, 5-1), ranked third in the nation.
