Medicare Payments for Scans Weighed

Federal health officials are considering a controversial proposal that Medicare begin routinely paying for an expensive, high-tech body scan for a range of illnesses, including all the most common forms of cancer. Proponents say that positron emission tomography scanning would help diagnose illnesses more accurately. Opponents say PET’s usefulness, while clear for some conditions, should be proved disease by disease.
