Why the Cash Call?

Please tell me that Liz Smith’s Nov. 22 column “No Gifts, Please; Money Will Do” was a joke on us. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones couldn’t have asked their wedding guests to endow their child, could they?

Or maybe Liz left out a line that said that the money received would be contributed to a worthy cause in the name of their son. I know that many young people celebrating confirmation or bar/bat mitzvah are doing that with their gifts.

Liz, help me understand this.

How tacky can you get? With all the children who go to bed hungry every night, many without a roof over their heads, wouldn’t it have been a lot classier to ask guests to donate to needy children and not to their son who has it all?
