Santa Ana Valley 30, Laguna Beach 20
Santa Ana Valley rode the big body of Junior Iafeta and the varied talents of Maurice Dunning at Santa Ana Stadium.
Iafeta, a 5-foot-9, 230-pound sophomore, rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown and came through when the Falcons (3-2) needed it, accounting for eight first downs. Dunning also had a 61-yard punt and took over at quarterback with six minutes to play after starter James Burgueno was injured.
Laguna Beach (1-4) led, 13-6, early in the second quarter thanks to a 42-yard touchdown run by Jason Boyd and two field goals. The Artists couldn’t sustain a drive after halftime, though, turning the ball over four times and scoring only on a 58-yard Boyd run.
Dunning took a lateral from Burgueno and passed to A.J. Alaman for a 41-yard touchdown in the final minute of the first half to give Valley a 20-13 lead. Boyd tied it for the Artists in the third quarter before Mapo Leasaga gave the Falcons the lead for good on a one-yard dive with one minute 41 seconds left in the period.
