Lusk Runs, Miller Sacks Lead Canyon

Quarterback Brad Lusk ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns and defensive end Robert Miller had four sacks to lead Canyon to a 24-3 victory over Walnut Friday night at Walnut High.

The Comanches gained 403 yards in total offense and held Walnut to 112 yards, as the Mustangs lost their third consecutive game.

Walnut (2-3) took a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 19-yard field goal by Daniel Al-Gattas. Two plays after the ensuing kickoff, Lusk raced 64 yards for what proved to be the winning touchdown.

“We hurt ourselves with penalties and other mistakes on that scoring drive by Walnut,” said Canyon Coach Brent McKee. “Once our offense got on the field, Lusk answered the challenge and away we went.”

Lusk added his second touchdown with 7 minutes 37 seconds remaining in the first half. Facing a fourth and one, Lusk eluded the Mustang defense for a 20-yard touchdown run.

Canyon (3-2) dominated Walnut defensively in the second half. The Comanches allowed just 37 yards and one first down in the half, and recorded seven of its eight sacks. Walnut’s Ronald Hill and Randy Davis, who combined for 454 yards and eight touchdowns rushing in the first four games of the season, were held to a combined 68 yards in 15 carries.

Travis Tolly had a 45-yard touchdown run and Ryan Keys kicked a 37-yard field goal to round out the Comanche scoring.
