Thomas in Butkus Running

Junior Robert Thomas was among the 11 semifinalists named Thursday for the Butkus Award, presented to the top linebacker in college football. The group includes seven seniors and four juniors. Neither of the last two winners--USC’s Chris Claiborne in 1998 and Penn State’s LaVar Arrington last year--were seniors, and neither returned to college. Thomas said he would return, regardless of whether he wins the award.

“I’m definitely coming back for my senior year,” Thomas said. “I promised my mom.”

Coach Bob Toledo said tailback DeShaun Foster, who suffered a broken hand three weeks ago, would see doctors before Saturday’s game to see whether he could receive medical clearance to play. “I’m not counting on it,” Toledo said.

Injuries will force the Bruins to replace three of last week’s starters on the defensive line, with Ken Kocher taking over for Anthony Fletcher (back) and redshirt freshman twins Mat and Dave Ball replacing Sean Phillips (ankle) and Rusty Williams (foot).

Toledo said sophomore Blake Worley would play extensively at both offensive tackle positions and redshirt freshman Shane Lehmann would play extensively at both guard positions.

The Bruins worked on their goal-line offense this week, a weak point in the loss to California. Although the coaches have used Drew Bennett as a goal-line quarterback because he presents an option threat, starter Cory Paus took all the goal-line snaps Wednesday.
