Proposed Mining Pit in Soledad Canyon

“City to Host Rally Against Gravel Mine,” Oct. 10.

I am a resident of Canyon Country and live only two miles from where the Transit Mixed Concrete Co. site is proposed. I am vehemently opposed to this operation.

I believe that the city of Santa Clarita tries to be self-supporting for all of its needs, including the need for concrete and aggregate, and believe that other areas in the county need to be self-supporting too. I strongly object to the devastation of my neighborhood to build the Alameda Corridor or support the rebuilding of the San Fernando Valley, especially when other suitable sites in north Los Angeles County are available and their neighbors want the mining project.

This behemoth of a mine will only pave the way for the others waiting in line for their approvals. I know the federal government stands to gain the $28 million and that lobbyists with Transit Mixed Concrete have spent big bucks to lobby the Board of Supervisors and have spread their lies of minimal impacts to my neighborhood.

I live in a moderately priced small home and enjoy the wildlife that come for refuge in my backyard, the peace and serenity of country living, with low crime rates and neighborly folks. If officials approve this mega-mine, my peace and serenity will be voided, my property values will plummet and the area will be opened to all kinds of problems associated with the degradation this mine will cause.

I adamantly oppose this project and pray that officials will look beyond the lies and dollars and have some sensitivity to the lives of families in the 9,600 homes and schools nearby.

I know they have a right to mine--but I thought I had a right to live. Reconsider and save the Santa Clarita Valley from devastation.

Both my law practice and my personal residence are located in Agua Dulce. My wife and I with our three children moved there in 1986 for the open space, clear skies and other qualities of country living. We are now threatened with losing all of that if the Transit Mixed Concrete project is approved.

I ask and urge you to use the influence of your newspaper to prevent this project from going forward. The financial profit that this company would obtain cannot outweigh the damage it will cause to the quality of life in the surrounding communities or the negative financial impact it will have on the value of private homes and businesses.
