RV Parking Limits Proposed by Panel

The Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council hopes an ordinance to limit recreational vehicle parking on community streets will be adopted by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors.

The advisory council this week unanimously adopted the proposed ordinance. The county counsel and county public works department are expected to review the plan within 45 days and the supervisors are expected to make a decision within 90 days, said Todd Haines, the advisory council chairman.

The proposed ordinance limits parking RVs and other oversized vehicles. Exceptions include loading and unloading for a trip, temporary repair and delivery of goods, such as building materials.

Oak Park officials began noticing problems in the community with RVs about a year ago. A handful of RVs were regularly parked on streets, causing potential safety problems and detracting from street aesthetics, Haines said.

Oak Park is covered by the county’s RV ordinance, which prohibits parking large vehicles in the same spot for more than 72 hours, but some residents have found ways around it, Haines said.

“A person would leave an RV there for 60 hours and move it 10 feet and they were in compliance with the county ordinance,” Haines said. “That was the problem.”

A committee including three RV owners, advisory council member David Chatfield and a homeowners association official came up with the proposed ordinance.
