Davern Lends a Hand to Brea’s Victory

Justin Davern scored two touchdowns and intercepted a pass to help lead Brea Olinda to a 35-0 victory over Savanna in an Orange League game Friday at Brea Olinda High.

Davern caught an 18-yard pass from Steve Stagnaro on the third play of the game to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead. With the victory, Brea improves to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Davern, a two-way starter as a sophomore, intercepted a pass on the second play of the second half and returned it 14 yards to the Savanna 17. Two plays later, Nick Farnham, attempting to score from the eight-yard line, fumbled into the end zone, where Davern recovered for a touchdown.

Brea built a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter when Stagnaro connected on a pass to Juan Guerrero, who evaded a couple of tackles on his way to a 25-yard scoring play.

The Wildcats put together an 88-yard, 12-play drive to score just before the end of the first half. Stagnaro ran it in from the one with 10 seconds left in the second quarter to increase the lead to 21-0.

Brea’s defense, which has allowed only one touchdown in league play, played a part in both the Wildcats’ third-quarter touchdowns. Davern’s interception set up the first, and Brandon Nicholson scored the game’s final touchdown by returning an interception 58 yards.

Ronald McCullough was the lone offensive spark for Savanna (0-8, 0-3). McCullough picked up 34 yards on his initial carry and finished the game with 59 yards in 17 carries.

Stagnaro had another solid game passing, completing six of seven in the first half for 158 yards. He finished seven of 11 for 166 yards.

Davern caught passes of 18 and 69 yards and Guerrero had three receptions for 73 yards. Farnham was the leading rusher for Brea with 91 yards in 17 carries.
