Genealogy Web site operator MyFamily.com said it is acquiring the publishers of baby boomer portal ThirdAge Media Inc. in a deal that could create one of the largest Web sites catering to baby boomers. The combined companies will rank 11th among all Web sites for page views according to Nielsen/Net Ratings, the company said in a statement. Terms of the deal between the two privately held firms were not disclosed, but Greg Ballard, chief executive of San Francisco-based MyFamily.com, said that the deal was done “from a position of financial strength.” MyFamily received $20 million in investment funds in March. Its investors include CMGI Inc., America Online Inc., and Compaq Computer Corp. Executives declined to say whether there would be layoffs. MyFamily has about 300 employees in San Francisco and Utah, while ThirdAge has around 90 employees and contractors.
