Charron Fine With Avalanche
Duck Coach Guy Charron said he wasn’t upset that Colorado Avalanche Coach Bob Hartley pulled goalie Patrick Roy with 22 seconds left in overtime Wednesday, hoping an extra skater could help produce the go-ahead goal and give Roy his career-best 40th victory.
Hartley visited Charron in the dressing room after the teams tied, 1-1, in Denver and explained the situation. Charron said he understood and had no complaints.
Duck winger Jeff Friesen’s shot from deep in his end struck the goal post with about four seconds remaining. Had the puck gone into the net, the Avalanche would have lost the point it gained by forcing overtime.
“If it’s not going to jeopardize the team, I see no reason why not,” Charron said of Hartley’s pulling Roy. “If a guy scores two goals in a game, you do everything you can to get him a hat trick. Apparently, Hartley had a discussion with Patrick before the game.”
Charron said he didn’t believe the league-leading Avalanche had tried to show up the Ducks, who moved past the Minnesota Wild and out of last place with the tie.
“It was not out of disrespect to us,” Charron said.
