Jeter Back, but Yankees Lose to Blue Jays, 3-2
Derek Jeter arrived at Yankee Stadium 45 minutes early, eager to get started on his personal opening day.
The New York Yankee shortstop was activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday after sitting out the first four games because of a strained right quadriceps.
“I was jumping a little bit at the plate,” Jeter said after he went one for five in the Yankees’ 3-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Jorge Posada hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the Yankees. New York put runners on first and second with two out, but Jeter struck out against Billy Koch.
Chris Michalak pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings for his first major league victory, and Shannon Stewart and Jose Cruz Jr. hit home runs for Toronto.
Orlando Hernandez made his first start of the season for the Yankees after doing extra conditioning in Tampa, Fla., because of a sore right elbow. He struggled through 4 1/3 innings, giving up three runs and five hits.
Seattle 6, Texas 5--Bret Boone drove in three runs, two with a single that keyed a three-run fifth inning at Arlington, Texas, helping the Mariners hand the Rangers their third loss in a row.
Alex Rodriguez saved a run with an outstanding play at shortstop, and had three doubles and his first two runs batted in for the Rangers. He knocked in the runs with a double as Texas tried to make up a three-run deficit in the ninth, but Kazuhiro Sasaki struck out Andres Galarraga and got Ken Caminiti on a grounder to end the game.
Galarraga and Caminiti hit consecutive fourth-inning homers to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead, but the Mariners rallied in the fifth.
Baltimore 4, Cleveland 2--Fernando Lunar bounced a two-run double over the bag at first base in the 11th inning, lifting the Orioles at Cleveland.
Reliever Mike Trombley (1-0) got the victory for Baltimore.
Detroit 5, Chicago 3--Chris Holt made his Tiger debut a winning one with eight strong innings and Dean Palmer hit a two-run homer to lead Detroit to a victory at Chicago.
Palmer, who had been on the disabled list because of a sore right biceps, homered off Mark Buehrle in a three-run fourth as the Tigers broke a 2-2 tie and handed Chicago its third consecutive loss.
Kansas City 5, Minnesota 3--Joe Randa’s home run broke an 0-for-15 skid and Carlos Beltran delivered a two-run single that carried the Royals at Kansas City, Mo., keeping the Twins from their first 4-0 start since 1987.
With two out and the bases loaded, Beltran lined a two-run single into left for a 4-1 lead. Hector Ortiz put the Royals ahead, 5-2, with an RBI single in the fifth.
Jeff Suppan (1-1) went 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits.
Boston 6, Tampa Bay 2--Rookie Paxton Crawford struck out a career-high nine and allowed one walk and four hits in seven innings for the Red Sox at Boston.
Trot Nixon hit a two-run homer and Shea Hillenbrand hit his first major league homer, a solo shot, as Boston had 14 hits.
