Sieper Leads Esperanza Swimmers
Erin Sieper finished first in two individual events and was part of two winning relays as Esperanza defeated Los Alamitos, 121-49, in Sunset League girls’ swimming Monday at Esperanza.
The Los Alamitos boys’ team beat Esperanza, 91-79. The score was unofficial, though, pending results of the diving competition.
Sieper, a junior, won the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes 9.36 seconds, and was first in the 100 butterfly in 59.18. She also swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.
John Hanna and Erik Chrisman won two individual events and swam on two winning relay teams for the Los Alamitos boys, who improved to 6-3, 2-2.
Hanna won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.62 and took first in the 500 freestyle in 4:59.29. Chrisman won the 50 free (22.85) and 100 free (50.72). Chrisman and Hanna swam first and second on the winning 200 (1:35.14) and 400 (3:29.07) freestyle relay teams.
For Esperanza, Brandon Lindford won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke (1:08.33), and Brandon Gladys was first in the 200 free (1:51.62) and 100 backstroke (56.33).
Both also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:44.87).
In the Arcadia baseball tournament:
Sonora 2, Santa Cruz 0--Eric Hale pitched his first shutout and Brett Smith and Jon Muramoto doubled home runs for the Raiders (14-1), who play Etiwanda at 10 a.m. today.
In the Covina Gladstone tournament:
Troy 14, Cerritos Valley Christian 6--Rauly Gutierrez singled, doubled, tripled, scored three runs and had two RBIs for the Warriors (7-8). Valley Christian is 4-10.
In the Pomona Elks tournament:
No. 3 La Quinta 8, San Bernardino Pacific 1 (5, rain)--Sophomore Brian Wason pitched a one-hitter and catcher Arnulfo Arroyo was two for two with two RBIs for the Aztecs (15-1).
In the Villa Park tournament:
Santa Margarita 3, Riverside Arlington 0--Eric Brock pitched five innings, allowing one hit and striking out six, and John Roth hit a two-run single for the Eagles (8-6).
Spartans take two--Villa Park defeated El Capitan, 5-1, and Rocklin, 1-0. Colin Higgins and Erik Averil had two hits apiece in the first game for the Spartans (10-5). Junior Chris Bragg (1-1) struck out 11 and scored the game’s only run on Ricky Sims’ hit against Rocklin. Host Villa Park plays Long Beach Wilson today at 3 p.m.
In nonleague boys’ golf:
No. 10 Aliso Niguel 399, Corona del Mar 402--Matt Schreiber shot a two-over-par 73 and Joseph Kim carded a 78 for the Wolverines (9-3) at Newport Beach and Monarch Beach. John Kwon shot 76 for Corona del Mar (8-3).
No. 8 Woodbridge 190, Mission Viejo 200--Chris Hirahatake and Jake Parsons each shot one-over 37 for the Warriors at Rancho San Joaquin.
In the Fullerton softball tournament:
No. 6 Rosary 4, Troy 1--Dana Kenney had two hits, scored two runs and drove in one for the Royals (14-6) in the third-place game. Mallory Anderson (8-3) got the win. Troy is 11-6.
In the Canyon tournament:
El Dorado 7, Sun Valley Village Christian 1--Kristen Karanzias pitched five scoreless innings for the Golden Hawks (10-5), striking out seven and allowing one hit in handing Village Christian (12-1) its first loss of the season.
In the Sea View League:
Woodbridge 1, Newport Harbor 0--Brittany Crouch pitched a two-hitter for the Warriors (7-9, 2-0), striking out eight. Shawna Corso had three hits and scored the game’s only run in the first inning.
In nonleague boys’ tennis:
No. 2 Los Alamitos 14, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 4--Phillip Davidson and George Canete, playing in the No. 2 slot, swept in doubles for the Griffins (11-2). Harvard-Westlake is 7-3.
