Other technology sector earnings, excluding one-time gains or charges unless noted, include:
* Broadbase Software Inc., which this week agreed to merge with Kana Communications Inc., said its first-quarter loss widened to $18.3 million, or 22 cents a share, from 14 cents a year ago, and revenue grew 106% to $13 million. Broadbase also said that after the merger with Kana, the new company will cut 850 jobs, or about 35% of the combined work force. Broadbase last month said its loss would hit 23 cents, prompting analysts to revise their estimates from an 11-cent loss to 21 cents.
* DoubleClick Inc. said its first-quarter loss narrowed to 8 cents a share from 11 cents a year ago but warned of a wider-than-expected loss in the second quarter because of the weakening online advertising market. Analysts on average were expecting a 9-cent loss, after the company warned in January that its results would miss forecasts. Revenue grew 4% to $114.9 million.
* Handspring Inc. said its operating loss widened to $6.7 million, or 6 cents a share, from $4.5 million, or 13 cents, in line with forecasts, powered by strong demand for new products and new distribution channels in Europe. Revenue climbed 261% to $123.8 million, exceeding the $120-million high-end range of analyst forecasts.
* Powerwave Technologies Inc., which makes amplifiers for mobile phone base stations, reported a first-quarter loss of $9.5 million, or 15 cents a share, much deeper than the 6 cents analysts expected, as revenue dropped 30% to $73 million. The Santa Ana-based company had earned $10.3 million, or 16 cents, a year ago. Powerwave also said full-year earnings and revenue would be sharply lower than analyst expectations.
* Rambus Inc., a developer of technology to speed the performance of memory chips, reported net income of $8.04 million, or 7 cents a share, for its fiscal second quarter, missing analyst forecasts of 11 cents in part because of falling prices. The company had posted a loss of $166.8 million, or $1.75, a year ago. Revenue nearly doubled to $31.2 million.
