Distance Runner Sartor Signs With Fullerton
Matt Sartor, one of the state’s top high school distance runners, has signed to run for Cal State Fullerton, the school announced.
Sartor, from Enterprise High in Redding, won the 3,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational on March 31 in a high school meet-record time of 8 minutes 34.08 seconds, which ranked him No. 1 in the state and No. 5 in the nation. He placed fourth in the state Division III cross-country championships.
* Elizabeth Huipe of Estancia has signed to run for Vanguard. Huipe is a three-time All-Pacific Coast League selection in cross-country and track and field.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Bill Thomson has resigned as girls’ basketball coach at Huntington Beach after six seasons and an 88-77 record.
His resignation comes a few weeks after vice principal Skip Moyer began investigating the credibility of Amy Sanders’ statistics, at the request of parents of other Huntington Beach players. Gary Sanders, Amy’s father, is the team’s statistician. Sanders, a 5-foot-10 junior forward, was a first-team Times Orange County player after averaging 20.3 points, 13.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists for the Oilers.
“My understanding was they felt there was no wrongdoing on Mr. Sanders’ part,” Thomson said Friday. “But that led to lengthy discussions I had with the administration, and I didn’t feel like fighting the fight any longer.”
The Oilers, dogged by injuries this season, were ranked No. 9 in Orange County and finished 16-13.
